National Memorial of Military Ascent - NMMA
950 E Main St. PO BOX 272, Grafton, IL
(618) 786-7000
Set directly against Grafton’s iconic 100-foot limestone bluffs along the Mississippi, the National Memorial of Military Ascent is one of the most striking veteran tributes in the nation.
The memorial features 12 life-sized, 500-pound bronze statues scaled directly up the sheer rock face. The installation vividly recreates the harrowing D-Day assault by the U.S. Army’s 2nd Ranger Battalion at Pointe du Hoc, Normandy, using our river bluffs as a living canvas.
It’s more than a monument, it’s an immersive tribute to American courage. Whether you're exploring Grafton’s deep military history, taking a scenic drive down the Great River Road, or showing family the power of local heritage, this stop offers a powerful moment of reflection with an incredible backdrop.
